The property consists of an former dairy farm in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada. Located at 42312 Yarrow Central Road, the property is dual-zoned, consisting of a total of 10 hectares (25 acres). Approximately 2 hectares (5 acres) are zoned Rural Residential and the remaining 8 hectares (20 acres) are within the Agriculture Land Reserve. The property is on the main route through Yarrow in the center of the business district. In 2003 we began farming one hectare of the land.
In 2004, we applied, and received approval, to rezone a portion of our property for a new live/work building with residences above stores. Our intent is to apply for further rezoning of the non-agricultural land to enable the creation of a pedestrian-oriented cohousing village of up to 35 homes with a learning centre, cottage industries and a small commercial area on the main street. The agricultural land will remain in the reserve and will support organic orchards, nut groves and field crops. Ownership and governance is through a cooperative known as the Yarrow EcoVillage Society. Decision-making is by consensus. Membership in the cooperative is open.
